
A “Walk Only Zone” will make tourists’ movement hassle-free in the Thamel area after it saw heavy traffic congestion in recent years.
According to Sameer Gurung, president of the Thamel Tourism Development Council (TTDC), “This is not a complete blanket ban on vehicular movement inside the Thamel. We are just restricting some unwanted vehicles that are causing difficulties for tourists and everyone here,” said Gurung, adding, “Despite Thamel being the tourist hub of Kathmandu Valley and the whole country, tourists and other pedestrians are at risk here due to haphazard movement of vehicles in Thamel where roads are narrow.”
The Nepal Demographic and Health Survey 2011 states 11% women and men aged 20-24 got married by the age of 18, which is the 8th highest figure in the world. The difference between what is legal and what is actually happening is an indication of how strongly entrenched traditional beliefs about marriage affect marital outcomes for this nation’s women and men.
